Native American Cleverness Native American Cleverness
Hello, I am a public librarian looking for a school librarian who is interested in Native American stories that feature a clever character who uses her/his wits to solve a problem.
I have a story in mind, but I am open to constructive criticism and solid suggestions.
Do you have an interest in clever characters, too?
Maybe we can Skype or chat on the phone and develop some solid story telling skills.
Thank you!

====Hi Cindi,====
I am almost done with my MLS and will be a school librarian. I am currently teaching. I haven't decided on my story yet, but Native American storytelling is one that interests me. I have studied it a bit in the Multicultural Literature class I just took, and have read several Native American stories with my 2nd graders, and yes, I have an interest in clever characters. I am willing to communicate by phone. I haven't done skype yet, but am willing to give it a shot.
Let me know if you are interested.

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessYes, Lisa, I am interested in working with you! Skype is quite easy and I am a luddite when it comes to technology so that is saying a lot. LOL However, I am also happy to work with you via phone.
Thank you for responding,
Cindi

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessCindi,
That sounds great. I can't wait to work together. Where did you look to choose your story? I will try to give Skype a try. I have already learned so much new technology through TWU, I may as well try another.

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessHi Lisa,
As part of the Literacy Matters cohort I have to work with a mentor. My mentor is a wonderful storyteller and he did a short workshop for our youth staff at my library. He gave me a list of Native American tales that he felt the children in our area would enjoy and the story I am thinking about was on that list. I am lucky to have his talent at my disposal.

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessCindi,Yes, you are lucky to have such a great resource. So far, I have looked in the resources Dr. M. gave, and typed "Native American folk tales in the public domain" into the google chrome search engine. I came up with several hits today. The thing that bothers me is that the site says they "are believed to be" in the public domain. I will have to do my homework and check the stories against the guidelines. I'll work on that more after Friday. I am taking my School Library Certification test then. After that it's all downhill.

Hello Lisa,
I hope your test went well! I am worried about the public domain issue as well. I plan to talk to Pat about that when I return to work tomorrow. I went to Austin for Spring Break and just enjoyed time with my daughter, so I am going to have to buckle down and get to work now. It seems that I never have enough hours in my day!

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessHi Cindi,
Yes my test went well. I was on pins and needles until I got the score though, because I wasn't sure if I had passed. It is one of those kinds where there are almost always 2 good choices, and you have to pick the best one.
Let me know what you find out about the public domain. I am going to do some research as well. I am glad you had a good spring break. It was too short though.
I will set up my wiki page for this assignment as soon as I decide upon the story for sure so we can start documenting. I think I will plan on telling my story to my class or a friend's class & get it taped. What audience are you planning on using?

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessCongratulations Lisa!
Luckily I have had a pre-K teacher call and ask me to come tell stories to her class right before I leave for TLA. Now I just have to figure out how to tape it!
I hope to get my wiki page done after I get off work Sunday. I am having hard time meeting 2 classes deadlines and planning the Summer Reading Club at work. Maybe I should have gone to clown school first to learn the fine art of juggling! ;-)
Next weekend I am off, so maybe we can get together then by phone, Skype or Facetime. I just got my first iPhone over Spring Braek so I am trying to join the exciting world of 2014.

RE: Native American Cleverness RE: Native American ClevernessHi Cindi,
I am still deciding on my story. I guess that is my goal for this weekend. I just got a smart phone this summer, mainly to text on for college. My number is 254-289-1681 if you want to get in touch that BI know what you mean about not having enough hours in a day. I can so relate. I willl have to get in touch in the evenings during the week, because I teach. so maybe we can talk one evening this week and make more plans.

March 24, 2014 Text Conversation
Lisa and I sent each other invitations to join each other's wikis and sorted out the issues until we both were accepted. We are now able to see each other's pages and document our conversations. We agreed to have another conversation on Thursday to decide on stories for the traditional storytelling project.

March 27, 2014
I was not able to meet due to a collaborative session in my other class.

March 28, 2014 Text Conversation

Lisa said she was trying to narrow down her Native American folktales and asked if it needed to be specific or just American tales. I told her I understood that it had to be a specific tribe. Lisa asked if Iroquois was specific enough and I said yes since Dr. M. had said Native American is not a culture, but a single Nation is in the collaborate session. I told her I also had picked Iroquois and we both hoped that was okay.

From Cindi: Yay! I was able to join this time. :-)

Lisa's response: Excellent! I have the discussion for the Traditional Storytelling Project below though..

Cindi, I have decided to use "How Chipmunk Got His Stripes" for my project. I checked and it has been re-told by several storytellers, and I could find it on several Native American sites. It is also shelved under 398.2. That meets the qualifications, right?

I believe that is correct, Lisa.
I have chosen "Turtle's Race with Beaver" based on reading the author's note that relates that it is a traditional Iroquois story that has been told for generations by a variety of storytellers.

Cynthia, Have you decided how you are going to tell the story? I am going to make bear and chipmunk masks to use while telling mine, I think. I will try it out on my students this week.

I am just telling the story without props or anything. The teacher specifically asked that I keep it simple because it is for pre-K classes.

Cindi,
Here is my first trial run. the only way I could get it to upload was to send it to yahoo. It is not very good, and it is too short, but if you have a minute, could you please review it? I am going to do the final taping tomorrow. (I hope).
What kind of flash cards etc. did you use?

Cindy,

Here you go. I have no idea how long it took this thing to upload. I went to bed & left it. The length is ok though

I clicked the link and it says the video is private and won't allow me to watch. :-(

Can you change the setting and I will try again?

Thanks!

Cindi

Hi Lisa,
I can't view this link either. I didn't use flash cards, but I did do a story map type thing on my wiki.
Cindi

Thanks Cindi.
I did a story map too. Just a word doc. like her example.
I think I might have set the security setting too high on the youtube videos. I will change it when I get home.
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
I posted my feedback form on your wiki collaboration page and attached it here as well. You did a great job! The children were very interactive and engaged.
Do you think our documentation is okay since we both have been posting all our emails and such on our pages?
Thanks for working with me. And I hope both our Dads see better days soon!
